Echoes from the Gallery

A collaborative recording project by Queen Victoria’s Consort and the West Gallery Music Association, bringing to life the vibrant sound world of English parish music around 1840. West Gallery musicians played a central role in worship, feast days and community celebrations, combining voices with evolving wind instruments. Queen Victoria’s Consort will recreate this distinctive sound using original nineteenth-century cornopeans, keyed bugle, slide trumpets, trombone, serpent and English bass horn. Joined by specialist West Gallery singers, the ensembles will perform historically informed repertoire, preserving and sharing a musical tradition largely lost from everyday experience and offering audiences a rare glimpse of England’s musical heritage.
