Martillo

The survival of concert programmes from the first half of the 18th century is rare in the UK. For Manchester, the records of the 1744/45 subscription series are unique. Through the research of Prof. Dr Pauline Nobes (Artistic Director), Manchester Baroque performs a reconstruction concert dating from 30th April 1745. A centrepiece of the concert will be Martillo, a rarely heard cantata by the neglected English composer George Hayden (c.1685–1722). Alongside archival treasures by Humphreys, the Italians Tessarini, Geminiani, Corelli and illustrious Germans Hasse and Handel, Manchester Baroque brings an overlooked chapter of Manchester’s cultural-history vividly back to life.
