Whose Wills Were Lawes

Bellot Ensemble’s second album, Whose Wills Were Lawes, explores the music of brothers William and Henry Lawes and the circle of musicians around them. Beginning at the court of Charles I, the programme follows their music into the very different world that emerged after the Civil War. Tenor Kieran White joins seven instrumentalists on period instruments for songs and chamber works by the Lawes brothers, Nicholas Lanier, William Brade, Christopher Simpson, Davis Mell and Matthew Locke. The recording grows out of the ensemble’s work with original manuscripts and early printed sources, bringing this music vividly back to life.
