Title
ENSEMBLE HESPERI
A Musical Evening with Queen Charlotte
Our project, 'Then I play’d upon the Harpsichord' seeks to capture a relaxed musical evening at home with Queen Charlotte in her royal apartments, where she delighted in holding concerts for family and visitors. We will perform chamber works, songs and keyboard solos by her favourite composers, celebrating her love of the harpsichord and guitar, and the instruments played by her many musical children - violin, cello, and flute. In her diary, the Queen describes her evening entertainments featuring tea-drinking, accompanied by music and cards: musicians will enjoy these activities at small tables while others perform. This semi-scripted concert will also bring Queen Charlotte’s musical personality to life through dramatic reading of her diaries by a narrator.
