Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque present a world premiere recording and performance of Chad Kelly’s new edition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Whilst many arrangements of this masterpiece have appeared, none have imagined how Bach would have transformed the Goldbergs as a work for chamber group emulating his Musical Offering. Employing a variety of instrumental combinations from this one-to-a-part ensemble, the Goldbergs are illuminated with exquisite responses to historical genres inherent in Bach’s scores: from aria-to-overture, fugue-to-trio-sonata, and concerto-to-quodlibet. The Variations take flight in ways which would have graced his Sunday coffee-concerts in Leipzig in the 1730s and transform the listening experience today.
