In May 2024, Academy of Ancient Music will explore a different vision of the English baroque, in a series of concerts featuring music by freed slave and prominent abolitionist Ignatius Sancho, alongside his better-known contemporaries Purcell and Handel.

The programme features, and is curated by, American countertenor Reginald Mobley and includes a new commission by composer Roderick Williams, who has set to music one of Sancho’s texts.

Performances will take place in Bristol, Cambridge, Liverpool and London.
