PARNASSUS
3 in 1: 'Christ lag in Todes Banden’

3 in 1: A Triadic reflection on three settings of Martin Luther’s hymn 'Christ lag in Todes Banden’ through music, visual art and literature is a collaborative, cross-disciplinary performance by Parnassus and visual artist Jérémie Queyras. It brings together three musical settings of Martin Luther’s hymn Christ lag in Todes Banden—by Pachelbel, Kuhnau, and J.S. Bach—with visual and literary responses.
The programme opens with an improvisation on the 11th-century plainchant that inspired the hymn, then moves through Pachelbel’s and Kuhnau’s seldom-performed settings, culminating in Bach’s dramatic and epoch-defining cantata. Simultaneously, Queyras will create a visual landscape, painting live on three large canvases to provide a dynamic theatrical backdrop. Poetic readings by poets such as T.S. Eliot are interwoven to reflect on universal themes found in the original text - suffering, sacrifice, redemption, and exodus - aimed to resonate deeply with contemporary audiences.
