1. FIRST ROUND GRANTS NEWS

We are delighted to report that grantee activity in May included two new recordings and rehearsals for June performances. The figures so far:

  • £38,000 disbursed to 8 ensembles

  • 143 musicians engaged

Please read on for project highlights from May. A full listing of all grantee events, with confirmed venues and dates through September, are now on our Events page.

The English Concert – Handel La Resurrezione (completed: April)

The English Concert’s post-project report included feedback from the highly skilled freelance musicians who were thrilled to have a substantial period of work making this recording, helping retain their world class talent. We were particularly touched by this quote from emerging violinist Annie Gard, a member of TEC’s fellowship scheme:

“To be able to bring Handel’s music to life with like-minded musicians gave me the momentum I needed to believe being a musician in these times still makes sense. For this I would like to extend my most heartfelt thanks to the Continuo Foundation and all its supporters.’

Ensemble Augelletti – The Library of a Prussian Princess (May)

Ensemble Augelletti recorded chamber music from the collection of Anna Amalia, Princess of Prussia, for Barncott Records at the National Centre for Early Music in York.

Ensemble Marsyas – Mozart Bassoon Concerto K.191 (May)

Ensemble Marsyas recorded Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto for Linn Records in the outstanding acoustics of Saffron Hall in Saffron Walden.

Joglaresa – ‘Boogie Knights’ (rehearsals and filming in May)

Joglaresa have rescued this project, inspired by the crazy marginalia in medieval manuscripts, originally meant to tour in 2020. The group rehearsed, recorded and filmed new repertoire,

including a special commission from composer Orlando Gough, in preparation for their concert tour to seven locations across the UK.

2. FONTANELLA ON BBC RADIO 3 ‘IN TUNE’

Fontanella recorder ensemble were in the R3 studio on 31 May, discussing their emergence from lockdown and upcoming ‘Delightful Companion’ tour. We’ve also been really fortunate to be given a grant from the incredible Continuo Foundation who just rose to arms and raised an incredible amount of money to fund early music instrumental ensembles. And so they have very generously funded a series of 5 concerts.”

Listen on BBC Sounds from 40:00.

3. TOM WEISSELBERG QC JOINS AS A TRUSTEE

We are delighted to announce that Tom Weisselberg will join the Continuo Foundation board of trustees, bringing his extensive experience of law, with a particular focus on the music industry, and a great love of baroque music.

4. GRANT ROUND 2 FUNDRAISING PROGRESS

We are now building up to Grant Round 2!

There is still a significant opportunity - and need - to support more of the period performance community and make a difference now to the careers and well-being of these important musicians.

We project the demand for grants will exceed the £475,000 requested in the initial round as word has spread about the impact Continuo Foundation has made on this community. Our goal for Round 2 is to help more ensembles and artists, supporting projects from October 2021 to March 2022.

As with the first round, we aim to launch the application process when we reach £100,000 raised, with a view to increasing the funds available for grants in parallel with the evaluation process.

Thanks to the generosity of new and first round donors, we are thrilled to report that we have already raised £42,000 toward this goal!

If you are able to help us reach this next milestone, please contact Tina directly.

5. SAVE THE DATE – SUNDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER

We are planning an exciting Showcase Event (separately sponsored so not using funds destined for ensembles!) for our valued supporters and local audiences in the stunning setting of Nevill Holt Opera, with its state of the art theatre. Further details will be available in July. In the meantime, please save the date of Sunday 19th September!
