Johann Jacob Walther: Scherzi da Violino Solo op.1
Illyria Consort will make the first ever complete recording of Walther’s Scherzi da violino solo, a set of 12 violin sonatas, first published in 1676. Johann Jakob Walther was among the most revered violinists of the late 17th century, yet his fame today is still overshadowed by his contemporaries, such as Biber, von Westhoff and Schmelzer. Perhaps the reason for this relative neglect lies in the technical difficulty found in performing his compositions. Some of the 12 sonatas found in his Scherzi da Violino Solo have been recorded previously, but never in their entirety, and Sonatas No. 1-3 and 11 and 12 have never been recorded. The whole opus will be released on the Delphian Records label.
