‘In Chains of Gold’: volume 3

This project features the greatly neglected English ‘verse anthem’ repertoire, to which several of the finest pre-Restoration composers contributed. The acclaimed CD series ‘In Chains of Gold’, supported by new research, has included anthems by, inter alia, Orlando Gibbons and William Byrd, and this last volume will complete the survey with works by Thomas Tomkins and his lesser-known contemporaries, some newly reconstructed for this recording. The vivid colours of HMSC’s early wind, together with a reconstructed Tudor organ and Fretwork’s consort of ‘Quire pitch’ viols, complement the specialist vocalists of Magdalena Consort and rediscover a glorious early 17th century English sound world.
