PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Our project in September 2026 is our most ambitious in terms of the number of concerts and amount of repertoire. It encompasses four concerts in Norway and three in the UK. We are applying for funding from the Norwegian Arts Council and FFUK (Fund for Performing Artists) for the Norway concerts, and would like to ask for your support for the UK concerts. We are planning a recording in 2027 so are taking this opportunity to play two different programmes to explore new repertoire, which includes some contemporary compositions and pieces that we have arranged for our combination of instruments.
We have confirmed concerts for ‘On your doorstep’ series in Golders Green (Sept 26th), Folkestone Early Music series (Sept 27th), and Luton Music (Sept 28th), and plan to rehearse for two days in London prior to these concerts. Luton Music has a regular audience, but for the Golders Green and Folkestone concerts we will have to do a lot of local publicity. We aim to make our concerts very accessible to audiences who are not regular concert goers, with chat about the pieces and our instruments, and an informal approach.
SUPPORTING INFORMATION
The Kaleidoscope Band was formed in 2019 and aims to bring unusual combinations of instruments to the concert stage. Everyone plays at least two instruments in each concert, and our repertoire contains pieces from 1600 to the present day.
We are a group of four consistent members, and we work with various lute players, depending on where our concerts take place.
As part of our tour in September 2026, we have three concerts in the UK. We are taking the opportunity to play two different themed programmes in this project to explore new repertoire for the group, including 20th century music.
Since 2022, we have played the following concerts:
Concert series performances in Luton (Luton Music), London (Plumstead Peculiars), Nesodden (Kantorissimo - we are regular performers for this series and have played every year), Kongsberg (Glogerakademiet concert series), Vinger (Klang under kuppelen), Sarpsborg (Musikkens venner), Oslo (Barokke onsdanger series), Modum Bad (lunchtime concert for staff/employees and in their public evening concert series), and Moss Arena.
Self-promoted concerts in Holt and Høvik in Norway.
We meet two or three times a year for an intensive period of rehearsal and concerts, always playing three or four concerts in that time, also taking the opportunity to explore pieces for future programmes. Last year we commissioned a new work by Rachel Stott which we performed in five concerts, and this year we will be doing a collaborative concert in Ringve, Norway with school children. We are also in the early stages of planning our own programme with an experienced educator that we can offer to schools.

IMPACT OF GRANT
We will thoroughly prepare two separate programmes for this project, and want to pay ourselves for the rehearsal days (4 1/2 days total). With a grant from the Continuo Foundation, we will also be able to use this rehearsal time to look at new repertoire for a recording in 2027.
We are committed to doing all three concerts, but one promotor estimates that we will only receive around £200 for the five of us, so we would like to be able to pay ourselves a proper fee for this performance.
