PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Rautio Piano Trio will launch a new concert programme with three performances, alongside the completion of the final disc in their recording of Beethoven’s complete piano trios on period instruments. This final album, to be released on Resonus Classics in March 2027, marks the culmination of a four-disc project and coincides with the bicentenary of Beethoven’s death.
Patronage and Influence: From Marianne Martines to Beethoven’s Archduke explores how music was created and sustained in Enlightenment Vienna (c.1780–1820). The final volume of the Trio’s Beethoven cycle is paired with a programme examining contrasting models of patronage and cultural influence. Beethoven’s Archduke Trio reflects the aristocratic support of Archduke Rudolph, enabling large-scale artistic ambition. In contrast, the music of Marianne Martines, celebrated in her lifetime but rarely performed today, represents salon culture, private patronage, and domestic music-making. A central figure in Vienna’s musical life, she hosted influential salons attended by Haydn and Mozart and was widely admired as a composer.
Alongside the Archduke Trio, the programme features newly created chamber transcriptions of two keyboard sonatas by Martines and her only surviving Symphony in C. Through historically informed performance and creative transcription, the project places these works in dialogue, illuminating the social frameworks that shaped musical life and restoring a significant but overlooked voice to modern audiences.
Performances will take place in Hastings (Christ Church, Hastings Chamber Music Festival, 12 September) and London (Bachfest, London Bach Society: between 1-10 November; London Chamber Music Society, St John’s Waterloo 22 November). Beethoven Trios volume 4 will be recorded May 12-15 in London.
Our target audience includes established concert-goers reached through festival and promoter followings, the Trio’s mailing lists, and series subscribers, as well as new listeners drawn through social media, BBC Radio 3 coverage (In Tune), Trio outreach, and engaging programming such as rarely performed works and ‘artists in conversation’ Q & A events. The Hastings concert draws a loyal local audience cultivated and sustained by the Trio’s violinist, Jane Gordon, Artistic Director of the festival. Filmed performances, a project trailer, and reviews will further extend reach, introducing the Trio’s historically informed performances to wider national and international audiences.
To complete a Beethoven piano trios cycle on period instruments remains exceptionally rare, making this project a distinctive contribution to the field. Alongside publicity for the Beethoven’s trios, these performances will raise the profile of fortepiano trios and introduce audiences to Martines.

IMPACT OF GRANT

This project will boost the Rautio Piano Trio’s profile and international standing. Completing their Beethoven piano trio cycle on period instruments is a rare achievement, while programming the seldom-heard music of Marianne Martines expands our repertoire and artistic reach. Filmed concerts and digital resources will grow our audience, deepen engagement with supporters, and create new opportunities for recordings, performances, and international collaborations.
