PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As part of celebrating Queen Kristina of Sweden's 400 anniversary we are planning three concerts (one outreach) featuring both European and Scandinavian repertoire. Queen Kristina was a leading cultural personality of the 17th century whose fascinating life transformed musical life in Sweden beyond. As well as inviting international celebrities to Sweden, she played a central role in the Italian baroque movement after she abdicated the Swedish throne to settle in Rome.

Concert No 1
Heath Street Baptist Church
Saturday 24 October 2026
Northern Star Festival / Baroquestock

J-B Lully:
Psyché

A Cesti:
L’Argia

This evening is a collaboration with Istante Collective, Baroquestock and Northern Star Festival. A festive double-bill celebrating Queen Kristina’s eclectic taste!
Cesti’s L’argia was premiered in Innsbruck 1655 and was performed to mark Kristina’s conversion to Catholicism.
Contrastingly, Kristina may not have heard Lully’s Psyché, but a celebration of her life would be unthinkable without the French style. As a young Queen, Kristina had brought French opera and ballet to the Swedish Court which was quickly transformed by the French, 'refining' influence!
(A shorter version of these pieces will be performed.)

Concert No. 2
St Mary's Church, Croydon
29 October 2026
'The Queen without Realm'

This instrumental chamber concert (quartet) features works dedicated to Kristina by Corelli, Bartolotti and other Italian masters while also including lesser-known works from the Swedish collections in Uppsala and Lund. (See PDF)

Concert No 3
Outreach: School Performance at St Joseph's Primary School (London)
20 October 2026

Kristina's lifelong passion for dancing will here be presented as s performance and baroque dance workshop. (2 musicians plus 1 dancer)

IMPACT OF GRANT

The impact of a grant would be immense as we will not be able to make this project happen without it. A project on this scale enables us to collaborate with other musicians (and dancer!) and helps us to expand our repertoire. We also intend to record and film the performances; hopefully leading to further opportunities to explore this repertoire.
