PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The orchestral concerts take place during the week long English Haydn Festival set in the beautiful market town of Bridgnorth lying within the West Midlands conurbation. Bridgnorth is an interesting cultural centre hosting a series of music and arts events throughout the year.
Concerts are organised in the important heritage church of St Mary Magdalene, built by Thomas Telford in 1792 when he was Shropshire County engineer. He lived in the town whilst supervising the church’s construction, coincidentally being built during the period that Haydn was performing to enthusiastic audiences in London and Oxford. This connection forms the basis for an 18th century experience.
The English Haydn Orchestra, playing instruments of the period, led by Simon Standage and conducted by Steven Devine, seeks to continue the legacy of the composer Joseph Haydn, acknowledged as the ‘Father of the symphony and string quartet’, with three evening concerts based around Haydn’s compositions and music of other great Classical era composers.
The orchestra provides a platform for classical based musicians performing on instruments of the period, to recreate the sound of the 18th century. Moreover it delivers world class performances to a rural community and supports an environment for players to develop their skills.
• Arrangements are made during the Festival week, in June, for rehearsals taking place on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th, and the afternoon prior to each evenings concert. Performances on Wednesday 10th, Friday 12 and Saturday 13th
• At each concert are world class musicians, both orchestral and soloists, performing on period instruments.
• Host families generously welcome members of the orchestra into their homes for the week of rehearsals/performances thus involving the local community.
• Performances take place on a specially erected stage in St Mary Magdalene Church Bridgnorth.
• Each concert is non exclusive and open to all ages and ability.

IMPACT OF GRANT

Following the 2025 Sunday performance of Haydn’s ‘The Creation’, with the extra costs involved, and ticket sales not meeting the expected amount, the orchestra’s financial reserves have been depleted. A Continuo Foundation’s grant would enable the orchestra to meet the anticipated cost of three evening performances and eight rehearsals, and provide some security for this year’s concert series.
