PROJECT DESCRIPTION
ECSE are taking part in four performances of Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with I Fagiolini, directed by Robert Hollingworth. After many years of performance research, Robert has made a number of key performance decisions – on tempo relationships, pitch and voicing – which make this version unique, and this tour aims to give this monumental work a new impact. The project brings together singers and instrumentalists who have considerable experience in this repertoire and presents an opportunity for them to contribute their individual scholarship too. I Fagiolini’s Monteverdi projects continue to evolve in light of new thinking and research, putting them at forefront of European HIP practice, and that this is a true collaboration. Thanks to Robert’s openness to taking ideas on board, ECSE’s knowledge and expertise is brought to the fore.
The performances are
17 May Ryde, Isle of Wight as part of Fairest Isle Festival
26 June Boughton Aluph, Kent as part of Stour Music
3 July NCEM York as part of York Early Music Festival
18 Sep Kings Place, London
In each case, the promotor fees are significantly less than the cost of the performers. I Fagiolini Charitable Trust are contributing to the shortfall.

IMPACT OF GRANT
ECSE has had a twenty year relationship with I Fagiolini. Over that time it has become harder and harder to bridge the gap between promotor fees and artist costs and the number of I Fagiolini projects which ECSE could participate in has had to reduce. This grant enables ECSE to develop and strengthen that relationship, and to place the group at the forefront of performance scholarship in this repertoire
