PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Hanover Band has appointed Leon Bosch as Associate Conductor and has signed a contract with Chandos Records to record the works of Johannes Mathias Sperger (1750-1812), a prolific composer of the classical period. Sperger has become somewhat of a hero. As Leon explains Sperger was known about, but nobody really bothered to play his symphonies and Concertos. Hence I have been working with my Students and colleagues to popularise this man's work. I believe that here is a composer, a contemporary of Haydn's who is just as good, if not better in some cases. Sperger needs to bought to the attention of audiences and with that in mind Bosch has programmed a number of concerts that include works by Sperger.
Chandos are paying for the production and post production costs, Leon Bosch is underwriting the costs of employing the musicians for the recordings and the Hanover Band are underwriting the costs of the concerts mainly from their late Founder's Endowment Account
The Chandos Recordings - Volume 1 was confirmed yesterday 13th - 15th January 2026 will be preceded by a concert with The Hanover Band in Arundel on Saturday 6th January. Volume No 2 shall be recorded on 30th June - 3rd July 2026. which will preceded by a concert at St John's Waterloo on June 14th.
The collaboration and debut concert with Leon and The Band was at Kings Place on February 23rd, as part of the London Chamber Music Society Season. Alan Barton's review for Musical Opinion notes the importance Sperger and the fine and elegant playing of the ensemble under Bosch.
This new venture into exploring Sperger, also offers us the opportunity to engage with Barenreiter who have shown a commercial interest in publishing these works, from the new editions that Leon Bosch has been editing.
We are asking for a grant of £7,500 towards the two public performances 6th January 2026 (Arundel) and 14th June 2026
