PROJECT DESCRIPTION
To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Gilbert and Sullivan’s first major success together and the operas that followed, David Webb and the Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by John Andrews are recording a selection of his finest music for the tenor voice. The project will feature arias and duets from the Savoy operas as well Sullivan’s oratorios and solo compositions, recorded for the first time ever on historical instruments.
Whilst we know precisely how many musicians were employed at the Savoy Theatre, there has yet to be a recording of this repertoire matching that original size of orchestra on historical instruments. Around half of the disc therefore faithfully reproduce this relatively intimate scale of Victorian theatre ensemble whilst the other half will imagine the various ways in which this music was adapted to the various musicals, outdoor concerts and drawing rooms of the late 19th century. performances which we knew took place and spread this music far and wide in an era before recording.

IMPACT OF GRANT
Substantial private donations have allowed this project to reach the recording stage. The grant will allow us to situate this with a record label, taking advantage of the highest possible production, distribution and publicity. This will make it possible to build the proper amount of publicity and PR around its release, focusing on the historical importance of the recording and the use of period instruments to record this operatic rep for the first time.
