PROJECT DESCRIPTION

To fund a workshop, performance and public performance of works by sixth-form students from a school in Oxford, in collaboration with Music at Oxford. Fretwork will demonstrate the potential of the viol to students at Lord Williams School, Oxford in four workshops in December 2025 and January and February 2026. The students will compose short works for the group, and several will be chosen for performance at the school on 6th February. There will be a final workshop during the morning of 6th Feb, followed by a performance of the students' works dugout the afternoon. Finally, there will be a public performance of Albion, incorporating some of the students' works.

Albion is a loosely structured programme examining British identity though iconic works - Elgar, Napalm Death, Delia Derbyshire, Kate Bush etc. - arranged and manipulated by composers such as Orlando Gough, Gabriel Prokofiev, Blasio Kavuma, Sarah Dacey and many others. The students will be encouraged to participate in this project.

IMPACT OF GRANT

This will be the first time that Fretwork have worked with students, and it is an exciting development that offers great potential for the students to come into contact with these unusual instruments and for the group to understand what young people are thinking and feeling. Albion is a perfect vehicle for such a project, being at once loosely-themed and open to new ideas and pieces that are significant to a younger generation. It offers them input, and the discipline of composition.
