PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A tune among friends
This project comprises a series of 5 casual performances held in pubs and cafes across the South East. These performances will be for the cafes and pubs’ regular clientele, rather than marketed towards a particular ‘Early Music’ audience and they aim to facilitate a high quality musical performance without concert hall etiquette or rules. They will be largely free to attend with an optional to donate at the end in order to facilitate future similar performances.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, social music making in informal settings such as taverns and coffee houses was an invaluable space for ‘new’ and ‘old’ music performed in theatre or court spaces to truly become part of the musical vernacular. It was also a space for musicians to experiment with arrangements of tunes and interact with audiences in flexible and social environment. Inspired by this practice, the repertoire for this project includes 17th and 18th century folk tunes, country dances, and theatre tunes which filled taverns, coffee houses, and social spaces of Georgian towns. These will all be taken from 17th and 18th century sources, and include traditional tunes as well as music by Purcell, Corelli, Locke, Handel, Matteis and Geminiani. We will use this project to expand our ensemble’s skill in arranging and improvising around tunes in a live performance setting and teach the audience some of the 17th century songs and sing with us.
For many musicians newly-arrived in 18th-century London, this kind of performance was a way to introduce themselves to the playing of their new colleagues and the London public. The locations that we have chosen all have significance to one of the five members of Augelletti - places where we grew up, or where we now live and want to interact more with our local community. We intend for this project to treat well-researched early music performed with a real love of historical performance simply as music that will entertain and give people a good time.

We are applying to Continuo Foundation to support playing fees for the members of Augelletti for two days of development/rehearsal and fees towards the performances. As this project does not have a traditional concert-going audience, we do not have a ticket income from the audience. The pubs are trusting us with their space, and so not offering a performance fee, but rather giving an opportunity of space.

IMPACT OF GRANT
This project is experimental and will take us out of our comfort zones by giving us opportunity to connect with audiences who are not already used to the music and instruments that we play. After an intensive period on the BBC NGBE scheme, we are keen to challenge our playing with different parameters and a CF grant would help us to put on a project that will build a new kind of performance trust and bond between us through the flexible and spontaneous nature of the performance situations.
