PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Apollo's Jukebox: Baroque hits, bawdy ballads & audience requests
Forget velvet seats and polite applause. Apollo’s Jukebox revives the rowdy spirit of 18th-century music rooms, where tunes weren’t just played — they were picked by the audience.
In the early 1700s, before streaming, Spotify, or even public concert halls, music was a luxury for the elite. Unless you were royalty or had deep pockets, hearing new music was nearly impossible — until Britain sparked a musical revolution.
In 1672, violinist John Banister broke the mould by inviting paying guests into his home for a radical offer: “You choose the music, we’ll play it.” For a shilling, the public picked the programme. It was the birth of a democratic, interactive way to experience music — personal, direct, and wildly popular.
This idea spread quickly, moving music out of palace chambers and into pubs, coffee houses, and the heart of city life. Apollo’s Jukebox channels that same energy — with a musical menu in one hand and a shilling in the other, expect lively dances, street songs, moving arias, and juicy gossip from Georgian London’s tabloids.
No concert formality here — just great stories, great tunes, and a proper pint. And the best part? The audience decides what gets played.
